I pulled the old one in the parking lot and for kicks felt the teeth on the ring gear and could feel at least one missing tooth.

Thats why the teeth are broken,wear and age eventually catches up with parts that work that hard. You will be able to keep your flywheel,you just have to remove it and get your local auto machaine shop to replace the ring gear.
